ANTI-POVERTY RALLY FIASCO

Khaleda boycotted to protest govt's oppressive rule

Sadeq Khan

The Speaker of the 9th parliament, Abdul Hamid Khan, is perceived by the Opposition as partisan in his conduct of parliamentary affairs for apparently his rigid adherence to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's whims and dictates.
In extra-parliamentary affairs, however, Speaker Abdul Hamid Khan is visibly persevering to bring the Leader of the House and the Leader of Opposition together, to create a climate of democratic tolerance and mutual accommodation towards ending the Opposition's boycott of parliamentary sessions. He took a well-publicised initiative towards that end, utilising the occasion of the International Day for Eradication of Poverty on October 17 (UN conscience is often cleared more by funding what is termed awareness-building programmes of rituals, rallies, celebrity missions and publicity stunts than by actual attendance to the target population whose cause such UN days profess to uphold)...[ FULL STORY ]

BHOLA-3 CONSTITUENCY AFFAIR

Parliament polls engineered to
help AL win?

Faisal Rahim

The Supreme Court judgment upholding earlier High Court ruling cancelling the election of Major (retd) Jasim Uddin from Bhola-3 constituency on Awami League ticket has in fact brought to light part of the whole election engineering process which won Sheikh Hasina's grand coalition a landslide victory to put her to power.
And as the role of the Election Commission (EC) is becoming increasingly clear in facilitating elections of Awami League candidates on false declarations of information or of the district administration on tacit support of the EC, political observers here are only finding them at a loss how to cope with the truth...[ FULL STORY ]

Mysterious fire at NCTB warehouse

Holiday Report

It took four days to extinguish the fire that broke out at a multistoried warehouse of National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB).
According to fire fighters, the fire sparked much earlier than detected, burning through the previous night, before being reported on Sunday morning.
The Detective Branch of Police and Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station are conducting separate probes into the fire incident. However, Maj. Shahjalal, director of operations of the fire department, reported discovery of unidentified white chemical close to an exhaust-fan duct between two stacks of paper in the warehouse...[ FULL STORY ]

FEAR OF ARMAGEDDON SHAKES S. ASIA

Dhaka must stay away from grave danger of imposed war

M. Shahidul Islam

Much like the smaller events that culminated in the First World War in 1914, the fear of an impending Armageddon among many conventional- and nuclear-armed nations has begun to engulf our own region. By virtue of being a lynchpin nation between South and South East Asia, Bangladesh stands at the epicentre of that looming geopolitical tremor...[ FULL STORY ]

Nepal's Maoists girding for final push to dislodge govt

Shamsuddin Ahmed

Political crisis is deepening in Nepal. President Ram Baran Yadav has cautioned the feuding political parties that the country may plunge into a serious political turmoil if the politicians fail to reach a consensus.
The warning from the head of the state came a couple of days after UCPN (Maoist) president Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) returned from a week-long visit to Beijing, where he had one-to-one meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao and a series of meetings with the Communist Party leaders there...[ FULL STORY ]

Attorney General bullies Judiciary

Hafiz Shamseer

Law of the jungle still reigns supreme in umpteen countries in this planet. Out there, guns and muscles rule the roost of the nation, and suppression and rudeness are practiced in gay abandon. They represent an uncivilised and rough-edged corner of vastly refined cosmos where we all are supposed to be living.
Bangladesh is not one of them - not yet - despite government-encouraged thuggery, extortion, pillage and plunders being the order of the day. It is still rated in the fringes of the civilised world where democracy is supposed to be practised; freedom of the press pursued and, most crucially, rule of law zealously upheld. That was the dream with which millions of people here fought a war of liberation 38 years ago to help themselves achieve a country...[ FULL STORY ]

Law needed to develop private

Abdur Rahman Khan

Security is a concern not only for the state or the community; it has become an integral part of life for individual citizens. Security is required for the protection of life, property, business establishments and uninterrupted civic utilities.
To ensure security for life, property and smooth running of various services, a professional security solution has been developed in different countries. Bangladesh also has developed the security service in private sector...[ FULL STORY ]
