4 decades of Pink Floyd in one night
Khaled Yasin Rashid
The Dhaka Sheraton hotel was the venue for the first ever full-fledged Pink Floyd tribute with the Band Stone Free paying their respects to the legacy of arguably one of the most revered and celebrated rock bands in history. Pink Floyd was first formed in London, in 1965 by Syd Barrett, who passed away in 2006. Initially the band pioneered psychedelic and space rock music, with their sonic experimentation and innovative album art. Later on, the band moved to a more progressive rock genre of music. To this day, they have inspired bands such as 'Genesis' and 'Yes' from the 1970's, to 'Dream Theatre' and 'Nine Inch Nails'. The Winter Garden at the Sheraton hotel was packed to the brim, for the event which kicked off at 6pm on July 3. The show was complete with spectacular lighting effects and visuals in an effort to reconstruct an actual Pink Floyd concert experience. There was even a large pig hanging in front of the right hand corner of the stage, referring to the song, 'Pigs on The Wing.' The crowd was glued to their seats for the three hour event organised by Excalibur Entertainment. Stone Free performed classics such as, 'Dark Side of The Moon', 'Coming Back to Life', 'Hey You', 'Money' and after persistent chants from various sections of the crowd, the band capped the night off with 'Comfortably Numb'. The songs themselves were very well performed. The vocals were near flawless and particular praise will have to be dished out for guitarists Fahim and Arshad who shouldered the duties of performing the solos. The crowd was very appreciative of the bands enthusiastic display and for Stone Free, it was a lifelong dream which became reality. Just as the band was about to leave the stage at 9pm, the audience insisted that they perform a couple of more numbers. Never wanting to disappoint, Stone Free listened to their fans pleas and performed a couple more tracks, much to the delight of the audience.

'Slumdog Millionaire' child star moves into new home
Agence-France Presse Mumbai
One of the child actors from the Oscar-winning film 'Slumdog Millionaire' has moved from his Mumbai shantytown shack into a new home, the trust set up to manage his interests said Saturday. 'Azharuddin Ismail's family moved into their new home last evening (Friday). We gave the keys to them,' said Nirja Matoo, from the Jai Ho Trust, established by the movie's British director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson. Matoo said the family's new home is a 250-square-foot (23-square-metre) ground-floor apartment in the Milan Subway area of Santa Cruz, near the Bandra district of central Mumbai. 'The parents told us the monsoon has arrived and they were finding it difficult to live in their shanties,' she added. The 11-year-old, who played the youngest version of Salim Malik, had been living with his mother and father in a corrugated iron hut in the Gareeb Nagar slum in Bandra. The makeshift structure was demolished in May as part of an illegal slum clearance drive by the Mumbai civic authorities. It was quickly rebuilt. Ownership of the new property would be transferred from the Jai Ho Trust to Azhar, as he is know to his family and friends, once he turns 18 and completes his education. The Jai Ho Trust is also finalising the purchase of a similar property for Azhar's nine-year-old co-star, Rubina Ali, who also still lives in a Mumbai slum.

Beatles 'shark' Klein dies at 77
BBC
Music entrepreneur Allen Klein, blamed by many for contributing to the demise of The Beatles, has died in New York at 77 after suffering from Alzheimer's. His funeral will take place in New York on Tuesday In a career spanning five decades, Klein earned a reputation as a ruthless operator, extracting lucrative deals from labels for his clients. In the mid-1960s, he managed The Rolling Stones for five years. Later managing The Beatles, he tried and failed to secure control of copyrights on their behalf. Though reviled by many, others admired his ability to negotiate with record labels. 'Don't talk to me about ethics,' he once told Playboy magazine. 'Every man makes his own. It's like a war.' He said John Lennon had hired him to protect his interest in The Beatles, because he wanted what he called 'a real shark - someone to keep the other sharks away'. Klein helped the Stones negotiate a new contract with their label but the relationship soured after he bought the rights to the band's 1960s songs and recordings - classics like (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction and Jumpin' Jack Flash - from a former manager. Keith Richards later described Klein's time with the group as 'the price of an education'. The Beatles hired Klein in 1969 over the objections of Paul McCartney, who preferred his father-in-law, Lee Eastman. At the time, a New York Times profile referred to him as 'the toughest wheeler-dealer in the pop jungle. Klein himself once sent out a holiday card parodying the 23rd Psalm: 'Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, because I'm the biggest bastard in the valley.' His copyright battle for the Beatles came as tensions among the four reached breaking-point. Eventually he did score a rich recording deal for The Beatles but by then John, Paul, George and Ringo were not even on speaking terms, and the band dissolved in 1970. One year later, however, George Harrison hired Klein to put on the all-star Concert for Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden in New York - the forerunner of the mammoth charity gigs of the 1980s and 1990s.
