Bangladesh rejects India's all delimitation claims
Moinuddin Naser in New York
Bangladesh has submitted a note to the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) last week rejecting all delimitation claims of India stating that the country has initiated an arbitration proceeding against India on October 28 last for achieving a delimitation of the boundaries in the Territorial Sea (TS), Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Continental Shelf (CS). Meanwhile India has objected to Myanmar's submission claiming the continental shelf in the Bay of Bengal and so on. With the submission of dispute by Bangladesh the Commission may ultimately defer the issue until the final submission of Bangladesh by July 27, 2011. ..[ FULL STORY ]
FLUID STATE EXACERBATES FURTHER
Is nation heading towards civil war?
M. Shahidul Islam
Every nation takes stock of prevailing situations in moments of desperation. Passing through one of such crucial moments, conscientious quarters in Bangladesh must do the same without delay. Over the last few weeks, fear of the country sliding into chaos and anarchy has intensified. Many even predict the prospect of a civil war due to the government's dogged determination to annihilate the opposition by creating an intrusive fiefdom to entrench political power. While many prefer to justify such a downward spiralling situation as a natural consequence of unimpeded pre-election foreign meddling-which had managed to install a regime of external choice - it, however, explains only part of a giant problem. No doubt the countries in which regimes were installed from without did invariably succumb to civil wars-the recent examples being Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, to name but a few-but drawing sweeping and generalised parallel with others could be misleading. ..[ FULL STORY ]
Look East policy exigency of Bangladesh
Sadeq Khan
The government is at last waking up to the need of salvaging the country's Look East policy. The Foreign Ministry did the right thing when it initiated action to stop anti-Chinese propaganda blitz in the form of a Drik exhibition styled as "Into Exile: Tibet 1949-2009." The government's intelligence agencies are said to be mystified about who could be the hidden hands behind the hirelings springing from nowhere under the name of "Students for a Free Tibet". In small bands, these Dalai Lama apologists appeared flashing anti-China placards in some street corners of Dhaka. It was strange since in Bangladesh there are no known fans of Dalai Lama, and political opinion across the board in this country is committed to friendship with China and one China policy...[ FULL STORY ]
Biased CEC should be replaced
Faisal Rahim
The Election Commission (EC), as the remnant of the military-backed Caretaker Government (CG) now apparently stands as a disturbing reminder to the nation of the need to free it from the shadow of the extra-constitutional forces which had tainted democracy and attempted to distort the country's political institutions. This compulsion is becoming a growing issue as the EC now tends to work as the repressive instrument against opposition forces to bring strategic advantage to Awami League-led grand coalition government. The commission this time has pushed forward a new amendment to the Representation of Public Order (RPO) requiring political parties such as BNP which have not yet submitted their amended constitutions to present it to the EC by January 24 next, or else these will stand illegal. ..[ FULL STORY ]
Ombudsman Act should be more comprehensive
M Abdul Latif Mondal
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shafiq Ahmed recently told the media that the government was looking for a competent person to be appointed as Ombudsman. Abdur Rahman Khan
"When newspapers write --- 'Fresh unrest in garment sector' --- it is not the proper headline; this is an understatement. The news medium should focus on the fresh blood of the workers that once again stained the garment factories. The news must focus on how many workers had to give their lives so far to develop this sector into the highest foreign currency earner one." This is how Moshrefa Mishu, President of the Garment Sramik Oikya Forum, views the situation in the country's garment sector...[ FULL STORY ]
