RETURN OF THE ROUBLE EMPIRE
Endgame foiled as Russia tackles Europe thru' Georgian tangle
Sadeq Khan
Countries around the world, including the fast-growing newly rich Asian giants, are ruing the effects of melt-down of the global financial system tied to the dollar empire. The melt-down is accompanied by patent signs of imperial overstretch of the sole superpower in policing its oil regimes and developing safe oil routes albeit under the guise of global war on terror. Winds of change are blowing in the home ground itself of the sole superpower, as its election day for a new President is drawing close. In this melee, one may tend to forget how a new Cold War is shaping up over what swings Europe, Russian control over oil and gas supplies to the continent or American stewardship of NATO and the sustained western values and privileges...[ FULL STORY ]

GLIMPSES OF THE GREAT
Isa Khan
K. Z. Islam
The Mughal period in Bengal starts with the overthrow of the last independent sultan Daud Karrani in 1576 by Akbar's governor Khan Jahan. Soon after the advent of the Mughals there was a rise of an illustrious noble Isa Khan. He virtually ruled Bengal for fifteen years as the Mughal governors failed to subdue him. This period also saw the rise of the 'Bara (twelve) Bhuiyans' which was a sort of a joint venture between the Bengali and Afghan nobles. In fact I find Isa Khan as one of the most colourful personalities in the history of Bengal. Akbar finally had to send his most powerful general Man Singh to bring Bengal under the Mughal rule. Man Singh shifted his capital to Dhaka in 1602. The conquest of the Bara Bhuiyans took several years and the resistance of the Bara Bhuiyans led by Musa Khan, son of Isa Khan is a glorious chapter for the Bengalis...[ FULL STORY ]

Fazle Rashid in New York
The gap between the rich and the poor is widening. Economic development during the past two decades has seemingly helped the rich to become richer and poor the poorer.
