The word "machiavellian" has passed into most languages including English meaning elaborately cunning; scheming, unscrupulous. Machiavelli (1469-1527) was born in Florence, Italy. During his youth, Florence was ruled by the famous Medici ruler, Lorenzo the Magnificent. But Lorenzo died in 1492 and a few years later, the Medici were driven from Florence which became a republic in 1498. The 29 year old Machiavelli obtained a high position in the Florentine Civil Service. For the next 14 years he served the Republic and engaged in various diplomatic missions on its behalf, travelling to France, Germany and within Italy. In 1912 the Medici returned to power when Machiavelli was dismissed from service and retired after serving a brief prison sentence. During the next 14 years, he wrote several books among which The Prince may be considered his brilliantly written and certainly the most easily readable of all his philosophical writings...[ FULL STORY ]
