Climate change in Bangladesh

Amlan Karmakar

Recently the Sidr visited the country which has claimed thousands of lives and destroyed thousands of homesteads, food, crops and other resources.
Nature is against us; and our incorrect activities caused serious damage to nature for a long time. Specially since 1950 we have burnt a huge quantity of fossil fuel by way of operating automobiles and other machines.
Climate change means a change in long-standing weather patterns. They can become warmer or colder. An increase in the Earth’s temperature caused by human activities, such as burning fossil fuel, coal, oil and natural gas. This releases carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases form a blanket around the Earth, stopping heat and increasing temperatures on the ground.
Carbon dioxide is a product of ignition and breathing. Higher level of Carbon dioxide is the major cause of greenhouse gases contributing to global warming. Carbon dioxide concentrations have increased from about 280ppmv in the last 18th century to 385ppmv in 1994 due to combustion of fossil fuel in steam generators and industrial furnaces, in cement production and in changes in tropical land use.
Methane is another major greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. The increase of methane in the atmosphere is closely linked to the growing population and its growing demand for food in the increasing numbers of livestock. An average cow is emitting 280 liters of methane each day.
Nitrous oxide is another of the gases contributing to the greenhouse effect. Sources are fossil-fuel combustion, biomass burning, and the use of fertilizer.
The following would be the probable scenario by the end of the 21st century. Temperature will have increased by 1-3.5 ° C depending on population and economic growth. Sea level will be 15-90 cm higher, threatening about 92 million people with floods. Rainfall would have decreased and there would be a reduction of food crops.
Natural resources are being used widely for industries, transport etc. Population has increased to an incredible extent. Huge usage of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas to run vehicles, generate electricity for industries, homes, etc.

A survey says that the world has become warmer by 0.40c to 0.80c since 1856. Comparing with the average for 1961-1990, global temperature increase could be between 0.60c & 1.40c by the 2020s, between 0.90c & 2.60c by the 2050s and 1.20c to 3.90c or higher by 2080s. Sea level which has risen 10-25 cm over the last century could rise 2-5 times faster by 2100 mainly due to expansion of the world’s ocean. According to World Bank 2000, climate change scenarios for Bangladesh—

So, according to this data there will be more dangerous situation in future. More damages will occur if we don’t take proper steps. Due to this phenomenon some country will be flooded regularly.
Already different agreements are done among many countries to save the environment like ‘Kyoto protocol’, but some countries are still not contributing to save environment.
We also can save the environment in natural way, because it is not too late. Trees are our important protective shield to fight against this condition. The number of trees is lower day by day. So, we should increase the number of trees through social forestry and other ways. Awareness should be raise in people that, trees will help them not only in disasters but also economically.
All of us must come forward to fight against the pollution so that there will not be severe destruction like Sidr and other natural disasters.
