Seminar on war films held

Robab Rosan

More documentary films are needed to project the incidents which took place during the country's war of independence. The documentary films will help the younger generations to know the authentic history of the war.
Speakers stated this at a seminar on the importance of documenting the atrocities, committed by the occupation forces in Bangladesh during the war.
As part of weeklong programme of the Second International Festival of Docufilms on Liberation and Human Rights, the joint organisers Liberation War Museum and Bangladesh Documentary Council arranged the seminar at the compound of the Liberation War Museum in Segun Bagicha in the city on Saturday.
Among others Mafidul Haque of the Liberation War Museum, Fauzia Khan of the Bangladesh Documentary Council, theatre personalities Ramendu Majumdar and Nasiruddin Yousuff, documentary filmmakers Manzare Hasin Murad, Kawsar Chowdhury andYasmin Kabir, and film director Badal Rahman were present at the seminar.
Speakers also talked about the reality, problems and prospects of documentary filmmaking in Bangladesh. They said that some younger filmmakers are working in the field of documentary filmmaking, particularly on the war of independence. But the filmmakers need assistance from different sections of society, they added.
In a written speech, Fauzia Khan proposed that they should work to collect oral history of the war, and to collect footage of the war which were scattered in different parts of the world. She also gave importance to making short length documentary films on the people who were involved in the war. She emphasised the need for disseminating information through the internet and preserve all the documents at the Liberation War Museum.

Cultural Correspondent

Literary exchange between Nordic countries and Bangladesh should be increased to further strengthen the bilateral ties, speakers told a poetry festival on Tuesday.
The observation came at the first-ever Nordic Bangla Poetry Festival held at Alliance Francaise de Dacca in the evening.
Norwegian ambassador Ingebjorg Stofring, attended the occasion as chief guest while deputy head of Swedish embassy Sven Ostberg, and consul of Danish embassy Erik S Johannsen were present as guests of honour.
Poets Rafiq Azad, Mahadev Saha, Sazzad Qadir, Habibullah Sirajee, Muhammad Samad, Dilara Hafiz, Aslam Sani, Masud Rana, Catheleen J Faruq from the USA and Liakat Hossain from Sweden attended the festival as invited guests
Laila Sharmin, Shahadat Hossain Nipu, Fahmida Khatun and Wahida Mitu took part in recitation of Nordic poems in English and Bangla version.
New Age correspondent Anisur Rahman presented an overview on 'Encounter with Nordic and Bangla poetry' at the festival.
The festival features programmes including the launch of a Swedish novel's Bangla version by Liakat Hossain, published by Samar Roy, director of Media Professionals Group.
Alliance Francaise de Dacca programme officer Kazi Abdulah Al Muktadir conducted the programmes.
Ingebjorg Stofring said, 'Poetry gives us a scope to describe the world around us and the world of our mind in an artistic way.'
'Poets both in Bangladesh and Norway have been an important source of inspiration when it comes to national awakening and identity-building,' the Norwegian envoy added.
Mahadev Saha said, 'This festival will be considered as the beginning of literary and cultural exchange with the Nordic countries.'
Speaking on the occasion, Sven Ostberg said contemporary writers Liakat Hossain, Gajendra Kumar Ghose, Dipak Mazumdar and Taslima Nasreen are strongly associated with the Swedish world of literature.
Quoting the Chairman of the Nobel Committee of the Swedish Academy in his presentation speech of Tagore, Swedish diplomat in Dhaka Sven said, 'Concerning our understanding of Tagore's poetry, by no means exotic but truly universal in human character, the future will probably add to what we know.'
'We do know, however, that the poet's motivation extends to the effort to reconciling two spheres of civilization widely separated.'
Sven personally believes that this is as true today as it was in 1913. 'Contemporary authors can and should work to bring Bangla and Swedish culture and civilization closer together.'
Anisur Rahman in his overview said, 'The western world has the idea about the treasures under the land. Can they have a look over our books in the shelf before their eyes?'
'The beginning of Bangla poetry and poetry in Nordic languages found the place at almost the same time. Particularly, our Charyapada and Swedish first literary rudiment Rok Ruenston was written in the same period,' Anisur noted.
