Group show at Shilpangan Gallery

A two-week long group art show is being held at the Shilpangan Gallery in Dhanmondi.
   The show titled Appointment 2007 by eminent artists of the country inaugurated on February 5.
   Stepping into its 14th year, Shilpangan has always been a gallery bridging the space between the artists and their art. Entering the exhibition, one can feel the difference in the atmosphere and also the arts that it exhibits.
   The show showcases paintings and sculptures by some of the country's most well-known artists, including Hamiduzzaman Khan, Alokesh Ghosh, Farida Zaman, Iffat Ara Dewan, Zahir Uddin, Javed Jalil and Anukul Mojumder.
   Hamiduzzaman Khan being one of the senior-most sculptors and watercolour painters has his own ways in playing with his imagination. His paintings portray faces in different colours, which depict his deeper thoughts.
   The acrylics on canvas and paper done by eminent artist Farida Zaman are more nature oriented, and portray the connection between nights, nature, feminism and water.
   As melodious as her songs, Iffat Ara Dewan does most of her paintings with chalk pastel and paper; they contain vases of flower full of life.
   Alokesh Ghosh and Md Zohiruddin are some of the well known names in watercolour.
   Ivy Zaman focused mainly on sculpture-based art, which involved sculptures of faces and figures on bronze and steel.
   Anukul Mojumder's paintings, done with acrylic on canvas, portrayed mostly the beauty of feminism and the various levels of emotions.

Rupantarer Gaan to be released on Feb 12

A music album titled Rupantarer Gaan sung by Shaheen Samad and Enamul Hoque will be released on February 12.
   The deputy general of country's war of independence, air vice martial (Rtd) AK Khandakar will unveil the cover of the compact disc at 5:00pm on the day at the Shaheed Zia Auditorium of the Bangladesh National Museum in the city.
   Eminent litterateur Syed Shamsul Haq, Kamal Lohani and Sultana Kamal will take part in discussion, which will be chaired by distinguished theatre personality Aly Zaker. Noted actress Sarah Zaker will anchor the event.
   The launching ceremony will be followed by the soiree of Shaheen Samad and Enamul Hoque.
   Both the event and the album will be dedicated to the late music maestro Wahidul Haque.
   The album, which is produced by Laser Vision, will include 15 songs and noted actor Asaduzzaman Noor and the trustee of the Liberation War Museum, Mafidul Haque will give the descriptions on the songs.
   The singers said that the album will include the songs, most of them were written and composed to uphold the spirit of the Language Movement and the war of independence.
   According to them, they have taken the songs which they sang as the singers of the Bangladesh Mukti Sangram Shilpi Sangstha during the country's liberation war.
   The singers also paid honour to Shaheed Altaf Mahmud, Abdul Latif, Sheikh Lutfar Rahman, Ajit Roy, Sujeya Shyam, Sanjida Khatun and others as they took lessons on music from them. They also mentioned the contribution of Chhayanaut in the filed of music in Bangladesh.
   Enamul Hoque said, 'We, under the leadership of Wahid bhai and supervision of Sanjida apa, worked for the organisation and sang in different places in India during the war to create awareness against the atrocities of the occupied Pakistani forces.'
   He added, 'Wahid bhai always inspired me to bring the songs, which were mostly sung in those days of liberation war. Later, I told Shaheen as she was actively involved with the organisation and still active in singing.'
   He continued, 'We then took decision to bring out an album with the patriotic songs. We have also plans to bring more albums of this type of songs.'
   Shaheen Samad said, 'We are feeling proud for the album and hope that the people in younger generation will be able to know about the song which inspired us to liberate the nation.'

Dhaka to host a French fashion show

Dhaka will host a two-day fashion show comprising designs of over 100 fashion brands from the noted French 'haute couture'. The show, titled Paris comes to Dhaka begins on February 9.
   Coordinator of the event Elisabeth Yearbury said that to highlight Bangladesh's new creative talents, four local schools of design have been invited to present the creations of their best students.
   Care Bangladesh will receive the proceeds from the shows. The organisation will spend the money to empower the women of the country, said the organisers at a briefing held at the Pan Pacific Hotel Sonargaon.
   '13 international models and one Bangladeshi born model Shaon will display around 120 creations by renowned 'haute couture' designers, said the organisers.
   The designers including John Galliano, Kenzo Takada, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Jean-Louis Scherrer, Carven, Pascal Giacomini, Eymeric Francois, Groupe Chanel, Georges Chakra, Loewe along with four Bangladeshi designers Aneela Haque, Bibi Russell, Kuhu and Rina Latif will display their latest designs, said Elisabeth.
   A French team of six experts comprising two arts directors, a choreographer, collection manager and sound and light engineers has already arrived in Dhaka to ensure the fashion shows are staged according to their plans.
   The event will be organised by MRS Syndicate Ltd, a sister concern of Impress Telefilm Ltd in association with the French Embassy.
   President of Care France and vice president of Care international, Vicomtesse Marina de Brantes, spokesperson of Care France and French actress Cyrielle Claire will also be present.
   Charlotte Genevoy, Delphine Phan Cao Bach, Elisabeth Yearbury, managing director of Impress Telefilm Ltd Faridur Reza Sagar and others were present and spoke on the occasion. Channel I is the media partner of this mega event.

Russia and Bangladesh celebrate 35 years

The ongoing exhibition at the Russian Centre for Science and Culture (RCSC) is a detailed look at the diplomatic relationship between Russia and Bangladesh post 1971. This is organised by the cultural department of the centre to mark the 35th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the two countries.
   The exhibition was formally inaugurated by the ambassador of Russia to Bangladesh Gennady P Trotsenko KM Subhan, president of Bangladesh-Russia friendship society was present as special guest.
   Hamiduzzaman Khan, professor of the Institute of Fine Arts was also present amid the other distinguished guests. Director of RCSC- Yury I Makarov coordinated the inauguration ceremony.
   'We have been waiting long to hold this exhibition,' said Proshanta Kumar Barman, head of cultural programmes section. 'It gives a glimpse of the level of ties of the two countries,' he added.
   The exhibition comprises of documents relating to the aftermath of the independence of Bangladesh. These documents are scanned from the original ones and are framed for the people to witness the assistance provided by Russia during the years 1972-1973. The original copies still remain in Moscow. The letters narrate the beginning of a new relationship of the two countries.
   Few photos are also on exhibit. One would find the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman talking to the Minister Counsellor of Russian Embassy G. Kh. Groshetsky.
   The exhibition also has few artworks displayed at the other gallery. These pieces are done by artist K.I Nadim. Surprisingly, the works of this artist have been previously displayed in other galleries such as Nordic Club and Alliance Francaise de Dacca (AF)
   Viewers ponder why this artist is displaying his works repeatedly. A visitor who has carefully followed Nadim's works previously in AF said that these pieces are uninspiring and superficial. 'Repetition always bore people,' he further added. Many opined that Nadim lacks creativity.
   Nonetheless, the exhibition was open till February 4.

Music scholarship for djuice subscribers

To promote the young talented musicians of the country, Djuice of Grameen Phone Ltd and British Council are going to introduce the 'djuice music scholarship'.
   Marking the occasion, a briefing was held at a city restaurant on Tuesday. Head of marketing of Grameen Phone Ltd. Rubaba Dowla Matin and deputy director of the British Council Richardson Sunderland were present and spoke on the subject.
   Djuice subscribers will get a chance to study on music in the United Kingdom, said Rubaba Dowla Matin. 'The scholarship will be a two-month long course on music in UK. I believe, music loving young people will take the opportunity, she added.
   Participants aged 18 to 25 with excellent academic and music background will be selected for the scholarship. Two participants will get chance in the first phase of the programme and classes will begin in September.
   Interested participants can register their names by February 14. The organisers hope to make a difference by introducing more opportunities in the future.

Din Bari Jaay launched

Din Bari Jaay, a solo album by Bappa Mazumder was launched on Monday. Impress Audion Vision released the album which comprises 13 songs. All the songs have been composed by the singer.
   The ceremony was held at the Impress Telefilm Ltd. Subir Nandi, Shankar Sawjal, Ila Mazumder, Faridur Reza Sagar and Mishu Rahman were present and spoke on the occasion.
   The speakers urged all to raise voices against piracy which has been destroying the industry.
   Bappa released the album after three years. 'I took three year time to release the album. I worked hard and I hope my fans will enjoy the production'. He dedicated the album to his parents late Ustad Barin Mazumder and renowned singer Ila Mazumder.
   Besides, six solo albums of the singer have been released so far.
